For more than sixty years, generations of families have wandered the hillsides of the Jones Christmas Tree Farm to pick out their perfect Christmas tree. Cutting the family tree at this sixth-generation family farm is such a tradition that parents now bring their children to harvest the family tree because of the fond memories begun when their parents brought them to the farm as youngsters. Since Philip Hubbell Jones, now 89, began growing trees as a 4-H project in the 1930's, much has changed on the farm, yet much has stayed the same.

Harvest-Your-Own Trees
There are more than 200 acres of Christmas trees planted on the farm. Be prepared for a good, long tramp! The farm grows six varieties of trees. They are Colorado Blue Spruce, Fraser Fir, Balsam Fir, Angel White Pine, Douglas Fir, and White Fir. In 2007, all Cut-Your-Own trees are $55 (includes sales tax) through December 17, without regard to variety or size. Starting December 18, the price is $50. If you are interested in cutting your own tree, you should be at the farm by 4 PM.

The farm provides saws, or you can bring your own (no chainsaws, though). Trees are baled for easy transport home. Free twine is provided for you to tie the tree on your car. The farm encourages tree harvesters to bring a strong rope and a large tarp. This will make it easier for you to drag your tree to the baling station and your tree will fare better on the trip home if wrapped in the tarp while on the roof of your car. Along with their cut-your-own Christmas Tree each family receives a special farm designed and dated pewter ornament from Woodbury Pewter.

Fresh-Cuts and More in the Historic Barnyard
The Farm also offers fresh, already harvested Christmas trees in the barnyard. All harvest-your-own varieties are available pre-cut and the sizes range from 2 to 15 feet. Natural or decorated wreaths, garland, bows, pine cones, small potted trees and tree stands can be found in the Sawmill Barn. In the old Dairy Barn, at the Holiday Gatherings Farm Gift Shop, traditional Christmas ornaments, handmade crafts, and cozy home accessories are fun to browse through. Need a pick-up before the drive home? Stop at the Christmas canteen for hot coffee or mulled cider and a fresh-baked chocolate-chip oatmeal cookie. Relax at the bonfire and enjoy the busy festivities all around.

Reminders

• Be prepared to dress warmly. We are located on a hill and weather conditions tend to be colder than other areas of southwest Connecticut.

• Wear appropriate footgear - that means boots with good, firm treads.

• Harvesting a Christmas tree is hard work, especially so if it is snowy. Bring enough helpers to carry or drag your tree on a tarp. The Barnyard area is the place to go if you need help handling a tree and tying it on your car.
