One of our new features will be our winemaker spotlight where we showcase the winemaker from each of our participating wineries and get their answers to a list of questions asked by press. To kick start this feature, today we are “getting to know” more about Jamie Jones of Jones Winery.
Q: How long have you been making wine?
A: Jaime Jones started making wine in 2003. As the winery grew he sought the assistance of Larry McCulloch who joined the team in 2008 and they collaborate on the winemaking efforts at Jones winery. Larry has over 25 years experience as managing partner and winemaker at one of New England’s most prestigious wineries. “I am excited to be working with Larry to bring our winery to the next level. His knowledge and craftsmanship show in our wines.”
Q: What was it that ignited your interest in becoming a winemaker?
A: I was fascinated by the farm wineries in the Finger Lakes while a student at Cornell University. I returned to the family farm and believe great wines can be made in Connecticut.
Q: Do you find a certain varietal to be bigger challenge than others?
A: Yes. They all have challenges; the European varieties in general, are more challenging than the French-American hybrids. The red grapes are more difficult to grow successfully than the white grapes due to our erratic New England climate. Each growing season mother nature provides a unique set of obstacles, and how a grower works with those obstacles is represented in the wines.
Q: What is your philosophy on winemaking?
A: Great wines are made in the vineyards. We focus our efforts in the vineyards to produce outstanding grapes. We limit our crop yields, pull leaves for sun exposure on the clusters and keep the vines mildew free.
