Blueberry Info & Guidelines 2021

Cherish your berries – they are precious and so are you and all farm workers providing your food. As always, we strive to make this berry season safe and enjoyable. We appreciate your understanding, support, and flexibility.

Rule #1: Stay home if you are sick or have been in contact with someone who is sick. This rule is always important when harvesting fresh food. Ask a friend, neighbor, or family member who has not been in close contact with you, to come to the farm to get berries for you.

We are so fortunate at our farm to have the space to keep people spread out in the great outdoors! . We ask guests to be considerate of others and be respectful of those around you. This year we will return to our traditional system of assigning every blueberry bush, and not skipping bushes for social distancing.

In order to keep groups small and appropriately spaced out, please no more than 8 persons on the same reservation. Families arriving from different households should make separate reservations; we cannot check in a family until the entire group has arrived.

We love children and young families, but we know harvesting berries can be a challenge at times for the very young depending on the weather and other conditions. We ask parents and caregivers to keep children close at hand. Running in the fields is not permitted.

For children under 10, we recommend a one to one ratio, of one adult/teenager to each child to help them pick.

Strollers and wagons can be used to take the children to the fields, but strollers cannot go into the picking areas. The strollers and wagons can be placed in designated parking areas; therefore, children will need to be taken out of the strollers when the family is picking.

We invite guests to visit the farm to harvest their own fruit.

  • All guests, 10 years and older, are required to pick at least 1 Jones basket, or two people can share 1 Jones box to pick into together.
  • Children under 10 years old need to either share a Jones picking container with 1 adult or have their own Jones picking container.
  • Everyone going out to the berry fields must have a Jones berry container and be harvesting fruit; spectators are not permitted so we can maintain spacing out in the fields.
  • See more on our picking containers.

Online reservations are strongly recommended! Time slots are limited and we do not want to turn guests away who have come a distance. With a reservation, check in is much quicker, and we can update you about weather situations. We post available reservations 1 to 3 days in advance based on weather and crop conditions. The reservation system makes for a wonderful guest experience by moderating any potential crowds, providing an enjoyable visit for all guests.  With reservations you are able to reschedule your reservation on your own!  Your confirmation email will allow you to pick another day and time that is posted.

Pre-payment online is required for the number of Jones containers you take to the field to fill. There is no weighing of berries at exit. After you are done picking, you are ready to head out, no need to check out.

The Jones Family Farms welcomes those who wish to wear masks during their visit; we are not requiring masks when guests are outdoors at the farm and are maintaining social distancing.

  • Maintain social distance with other guests and staff.
  • Wear your mask when going inside any of our farm buildings if you are not fully vaccinated.
  • Please obey signs and staff instructions.
  • We ask you bring a mask in case you need to put it on.

As always, it is extremely important not to eat berries in the field. All food crops are recommended to be washed before eating. This is because they are grown outside where there is a possibility of an animal walking by or flying overhead. Our farm has always emphasized this important food safety measure, which is also a requirement in the federal Food Safety guidelines; we will enforce it. Wash berries at home before serving. Please note, there is no picnicking or outside food permitted at the farm. Thank you for keeping the fields clean and healthy.

Only at Pumpkinseed Hill will Berry Ferry truck service always take guests to the blueberry fields.  There are no longer social distancing restrictions for seating people on the Berry Ferry.  For guests who prefer more space when traveling to the fields, select a day when we are at the Valley Farm. We have found that when guests walk to the field, it creates a very pleasant, peaceful farm experience. Guests comment that they enjoy the beautiful farm walk as part of their berry picking experience. So bring your walking shoes! Please, no flip flops. Guests will need to be fit to walk up to 15 minutes each way and carry their berries. We will offer fresh picked berries each day at our Homestead Farm for those not able to walk out to the fields.

The farm has two hand washing sinks at each picking location for guests. As always, guests are strongly encouraged to pick with clean hands.

We have our All-You-Can-Carry basket, with discounts when purchasing multiple baskets. We also offer our special All-You-Can-Carry Jones Berry Box.  For those interested in volume picking, this is a great value for local berries.

Which container is best for you? Baskets are better for multiple members in a group, especially when there are young children. Boxes are perfect for one or two people looking to pick 8 or more pounds of fruit.

Which is the best price? For the baskets, there is a discount the more you pick. Four baskets cost the same price as 1 box, and they both represent the same 33% off per pound.

Remember we have a minimum picking requirement for all guests entering the fields.: 1 basket minimum per guest 10 years  and older; or 1-2 people can share a box. Children under 10 can share a basket or box with an adult.

Basket - holds 2 quarts, 2 to 2.5 pounds, All-You-Can-Carry. Great for families and children.

  • 1 basket $16
  • 2 baskets $32 ($16 each)
  • 3 baskets $38 ($12.66 each)
  • 4 baskets $42 ($10.50 each)
  • 5 or more baskets $10.50 each

Box – hold 6+ quarts, 10-12+ pounds, All-You-Can-Carry. Great for volume picking for 1 or 2 people.

  • Box Special  - $45, flat price ($43 for guests returning with their Jones Berry Box.)

Reusing Your Jones Basket or Box - when you arrive at the farm, you will receive $1 back for each basket  and $2 off each box you fill. Please note, you can only pick into Jones picking containers.

Weather permitting, we pick seven days a week during blueberry season, with most days being mornings only.  With the reservation system this year, we will post our hours every few days. Please check there before visiting. From when we open for blueberries in early July, we expect to be picking 7 days a week, weather permitting, until the first days into August. PLEASE NOTE: we are usually closed Sunday afternoons and we close the fields 45 minutes after the last reservation time slot. If you are late for your reservation at the end of day, we will issue you a certificate to come back again another day when there is enough time to pick.

We pick at two different farms, Pumpkinseed Hill OR the Valley Farm. On the morning of your visit, call 203.929.8425 or check our website banner for our picking location information! DO NOT ask your GPS to send you to the Jones Family Farms (that will send you to the main farm and our winery).

We follow the best agricultural practices which outline that there should be no eating, picnicking, and outside food near harvest areas. We welcome water bottles, but other snacks should be enjoyed before or after your visit. Thank you so much for keeping the farm clean and healthy.

If we close the farm for severe weather such as thunderstorms, we will offer you a refund or credit. We do pick in light rain. This is one reason that we are not posting reservations until 1 or 2 days in advance so you know the weather forecast.

If you cannot pick due to illness, contact us as early as possible (ideally one day in advance or in the morning by 9 am) at and we will send you a credit certificate for you to reschedule your visit.

No refunds for those who do not show for their appointments, since it is likely we had to turn other guests away for that time slot. Thank you.

Be good to the land and the land will be good to you.
